Board Certified Periodontist, Dr. Scott O. Kissel

LANAP® Laser Treatment

Stop periodontal disease with a gentle and highly effective approach. Dr. Scott Kissel offers patients LANAP laser treatment conducted with a microscope. Dr. Kissel is one of the first periodontists to combine the advantages of the microscope with LANAP. Used together, these instruments allow for the removal of more tartar and significantly increase the likelihood of reattachment of gum tissue or regeneration of bone to your tooth. It can also be used to treat ailing implants.

The laser-assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP) is:

  • The only FDA-accepted laser protocol for gum disease treatment.
  • Shown through research and histological studies to remove bacteria that causes gum disease.

Because there’s no scalpel involved, you don’t require incisions to remove tissue and bacteria, and you preserve more of your healthy gum tissue.

What Is LANAP?

Dr. Kissel has received training in the use of the PerioLase® MVP-7™. This extremely precise laser targets and eliminates bacteria between the gum and teeth.

In LANAP, Dr. Kissel uses gentle pulses of laser light to destroy bacteria and diseased tissue. He also breaks up tartar deposits in the gumline and uses techniques to encourage reattachment of gum tissue and bone regeneration. There is no cutting or sutures involved.

One of the reasons LANAP patients choose Dr. Kissel for their treatment is for his advanced skills in microscopic procedures. This approach allows him to see and remove significantly more tartar. As a result, you are less likely to need follow-up surgery and more likely to control periodontal disease.

Benefits of LANAP

With LANAP:

Many patients are good candidates for LANAP, and the procedure offers them the opportunity to save teeth that may otherwise be a lost cause.

What LANAP Patients Can Expect

Patients can schedule an appointment with Dr. Kissel to control periodontal disease and repair damage to their oral health. During your procedure, Dr. Kissel will:

  • Provide you with The Wand, a local anesthetic system to give you greater comfort during the procedure.
  • Examine your mouth to see how deep your gum pockets are and how much connective tissue and bone has detached from the tooth roots.
  • Use a microscope to see and remove more of the tartar that is causing periodontal disease.
  • Aim gentle pulses of laser light into the gum pockets and the tartar deposits beneath the gumline, destroying bacteria and diseased tissue. The laser will not impact your healthy gums and tissue.
  • Use the laser to create protective seals around the teeth to encourage gum reattachment to the root surfaces. This makes stitches unnecessary.

Dr. Kissel may also recommend adjusting your bite to promote healing and provide your teeth with greater comfort and stability in the future. This is particularly important for teeth that have suffered bone loss.

Recovery from LANAP is mild. You can manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain medication. Plan to adjust your diet to very soft foods for about three days, moving to soft foods for one week before returning to your normal diet.

LANAP FAQs

How are lasers used for gum disease treatment in your office?

I am a board-certified periodontist who regularly reviews and interprets the international periodontal and implant research in order to provide the most educated recommendations to my patients.  I use lasers to perform a variety of procedures. For gum disease and periodontitis, I utilize LANAP (laser-assisted new attachment procedure) protocol in conjunction with a microscope.

The most effective treatment of periodontal disease must incorporate a method of thoroughly cleaning the roots of teeth of bacteria (plaque/tartar).  Research shows that after traditional scaling and root planning, a large percentage of tartar remains.  The highest level of care can be delivered when using a microscope, as vision and illumination are maximized. More tartar can be removed, resulting in a greater resolution of gum/periodontal disease.

The periolase mvp-7 laser can remove diseased, infected tissue while sparing healthy tissue.  It is extremely difficult to save healthy tissue when utilizing a surgical scalpel so more recession is incurred with traditional surgery.  Microscope-assisted laser treatment can disinfect the treatment site and promote the regeneration of connective tissue and bone, structures that support your teeth.  With traditional care regeneration of bone requires a surgical procedure.  In my practice, microsurgical procedures result in little to no pain.   However, if the same result can be accomplished using the even less invasive approach of laser treatment with no surgery, I would recommend the laser for gum/ periodontal disease treatment.

Why do you use the PerioLase® MVP-7™ Laser?

The claims made by this FDA-approved device are backed by well-designed studies showing human histology.  The laser allows for a minimally invasive technique that is gentler and less painful than traditional methods of treatment.

Laser dentistry is gentle and minimally invasive. For example, laser gum disease treatment with Dr. Kissel is less painful and causes patients less anxiety than traditional gum disease treatment because there are no incisions. The laser removes only bacteria and nothing else in the process, which means less pain, less bleeding, and no strong pain medication.

Laser treatment fees at my office are similar to surgical fees.  Often LANAP restores periodontal health, eliminating the need for additional procedures.  After laser treatment, you can immediately return to play or work so the quality of your life is not impacted.

Yes, laser dentistry is very safe when used according to prescribed practices. Dr. Kissel performs FDA-cleared laser dentistry procedures using the FDA-cleared PerioLase® MVP-7™ which is fully-backed by medical research and human histological studies. Patients just need to wear protective glasses during a laser gum disease treatment to shield the eyes – the same way sunglasses protect the eyes from harmful sun rays.

Ask to see your doctor’s credentials. A periodontist who performs laser dentistry should have documentation to show he or she has had the necessary training and certifications to provide laser gum disease treatment. Certification from the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD) and training from the laser manufacturer are reputable examples.

The only way to know for sure if laser dentistry is right for you is to have a consultation for gum disease treatment with Dr. Kissel.
